I’m traveling this weekend to the Society for Human Resource Management’s Annual Conference and Expo in Atlanta. It’s sure to be a great trip as I reconnect with old friends and make new ones.
It’s also my first SHRM conference since I started writing for their We Know Next blog. This blog focuses on emerging trends and topics about the future of work. Regardless of your job title, if you have an interest in understanding what’s changing in the workplace, this is a resource for you.
SHRM recently interviewed me for the blog as part of their Thought Leader series on what it means to be an effective leader. I hope you’ll take a moment and check out my thoughts here. I get to talk about different leadership styles and that age-old conversation about being a leader versus a manager. And, I touch on one of my favorite topics – workplace power.
Thanks for checking out the article and reading HR Bartender!
If you’re attending the conference, I’m going to be hanging out with my friends from Ultimate Software (booth #905) during the Grand Opening of the expo, please stop by and say hello. Or drop a note in the comments so we can connect IRL …

I came across this recently and it seemed appropriate…
The difference between a boss and a leader:
A boss drives employees, a leader coaches them.
A boss depends on authority, a leader on good will.
A boss inspires fear, a leader generates enthusiasm.
A boss says “I”, a leader says “We”.
A boss knows how it is done, a leader shows how it is done.
A boss takes credit, a leader gives credit.
A boss commands, a leader asks.
A boss says “Go”, a leader says “Let’s go”
Thought it was appropriate.
