We all like working with our friends. Who wouldn’t? And research shows when we do, our engagement is better and we stay with the company longer. That being said, trying to get hired along with your BFF isn’t always the best idea. Which is why I wanted to answer this reader question.
My friend and I are seeking to work with XYZ Company. We are two creative directors; her from the music/entertainment, and I from the fine art/education world. We are both highly specialized in our respective concentrations. We are definitely those outside-of-box thinking and looking creatives, and that is why I am thinking XYZ Company is perfect for us. I was wondering if you might be able to give us some advice about getting hired.
Here’s my suggestion to the couple looking to get hired at the same company:
Any other recommendations? How would you suggest they go about getting hired at the same organization?

Great advice!
My BFF and I did go get a job together once – it worked out great. We were in high school though and it was at the grocery store. Quite a bit less complex than creative directors. 😉
Sharlyn – I have a a question sort of along the same lines. Job sharing…I used to hear a lot more about it – like it was something that was going to start taking off more. I haven’t heard much about it lately. Are many people doing that?

I work at a staffing agency where some of my co-workers are best friends. In my experience, best friends tend to work well together, but if really can vary. A solution to make sure you could work well together is whether or not you can stand rooming or living with each other, then you will most likely be able to handle working together as BFFS.

Ginger, thanks for the comment. You’re right – the type of work could definitely have an impact on getting hired with your BFF.
Regarding job sharing, I honestly don’t hear much about it. I know it still exists and see an occasional article. I wonder if telework is changing perceptions about job sharing.
