There are lots of things I’m capable of doing. The question is what’s the best use of my time.
As a consultant, I ask myself this often. Could I fill out my tax forms? Sure, but is that the best use of my time. Can I fix my computer? Probably, but is that taking me away from other things. Things that might give me a better return on my time and energy.
Businesses should ask themselves the same. Employees should do the most valuable work. Then the company can find partners for the rest. Like the specialized work that the company only needs occasionally. Or the work that other companies can scale more effectively to save costs.
Today’s cartoon from our friends at Kronos tells the story.
Unless your specialty is painting, ask yourself – are the things you’re working on the best use of your time?
