A reader wants to know how to get started in human resources.
Hi. I really need help. I have a degree in fashion merchandising and would like to start a career in HR but I don’t know where to begin. Should I take classes and if so which classes? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve written previously about how I started in human resources, my career path, and becoming a consultant. So instead of talking all about me, I wanted to share with you some stories from others.
Earlier this year, Chris Ponder, author of the blog Xtreme Human Resources did a series of posts called “Be a Storyteller: Tell Me About Your Career.” He asked his readers to answer three questions.
1st Question – Why did you choose your profession and how did you get your foot into the profession?
2nd Question – Explores career milestones such as college degrees, major mistakes, and making an impact.
3rd Question – Talks about professional development, future career goals and staying marketable in today’s workplace.
The value in these posts is the way Chris tees up the question and the open, honest comments from his readers. For anyone looking to learn from the experience of other HR pros…check out this series.
What other advice would you give to this reader about making a career change? Leave your suggestions in the comments!

Connecting with HR pros was the reason I have chosen to pursue into HR field career. But I was already studding at college back there. Some other people I met, who’ve started in some other field and then turned to HR, found it helpful to start with HR basics, getting this write would help with understanding everything else 🙂
