Does the concept of “playing hooky” exist anymore? Today’s Time Well Spent cartoon from Kronos got me thinking.
As a consultant, my personal and professional lives are very blended. I work on weekends. And I love going to the beach in the middle of the week (when I can get away). It’s quiet. I like grocery shopping on weekdays – no crowds. But if a client saw me post a selfie with a pina colada on a Wednesday afternoon, does that mean I’m playing hooky? Not sure I’d agree.
Mobile and social technologies allow us to put our lives out on public display. As a watcher/listener on these platforms, I have to be careful not to pass judgment. For many, the traditional work week just doesn’t exist anymore.

If you tell your boss you can’t come in, you’d think you’d take every precaution to cover your tracks, let alone self-destructing your sense of trust

I think we’ll see more and more of this as the economy picks up and employees have more choices – clocking hours just doesn’t cut it anymore! Get your work done and live your life how you want. Love it B-)
