Planning Your Career – Ask #HR Bartender

It seemed only fitting to answer this question while I’m at the SHRM Annual Conference and Expo in Orlando this week.

How to plan your career advancement? Are there certain things that are more correct or commonly accepted by others?

Over the years, I’ve written quite a bit about my career in human resources. Here are a few of my favorites that you can check out:

This week, while I’m at SHRM Annual, I’ll be networking with colleagues and learning more about SHRM’s new certification. One of the things that’s both interesting and exciting about HR is the way people enter the field. It seems like I can talk to ten people and everyone has a different story. Honestly, I think that’s terrific. It represents how broad the responsibilities are within the HR function.

When it comes to career advancement, I believe it’s important to have a career plan. Know where you want to be in five and ten years – and be able to articulate why if somebody asks. That doesn’t mean the plan can’t change with the business world and your personal circumstances. But have a plan.

If you’re unsure about what to put in your career plan, reach out to people in your field that you admire and ask them what they do for career development. You don’t have to follow their plan exactly. Look for shared trends to tell you what’s commonly accepted in your field.

Let me ask you…what do you do for career development? Leave your suggestions in the comments.
