Quick Shots for #HR and #Business Pros – August 2014

Happiness, quick, shots, quick shots, emerging businesses, paycheck, books, Intern Queen

I’m dedicating this month to the new world of work. We talk quite often about different skills we need to learn but I’m finding emerging businesses whose mission will change the way we think about work.

Activehours is a new way to get paid. No more waiting around for the next paycheck. It’s a very interesting concept. Steve Boese does a good job of explaining the implications on his post, “In a same-day delivery world, does waiting two weeks to get paid make sense?

One of the reasons I bought a tablet was for the reader capabilities. But I’ve been a holdout on reading with a digitial device because I have a lot of paper books. Then I discovered BitLit – you take a photo of your book, write your name on the copyright page, and you receive access to an ebook! It’s still in the early stages and doesn’t have a complete library of works – you can check it out here.

Speaking of books, Lauren Berger, founder of InternQueen.com, has a book out titled, “Welcome to the Real World”. Don’t let the name of her website fool you. This book has plenty of wisdom for professionals, not just interns. I particularly liked the chapter on –ize words (think organize, prioritize, etc.)

This is still a prototype but judging from the comments, there might be a market for it. Yanko Design is featuring a desktop microwave called the BrainWave. So if you can’t tear yourself away from your desk for three minutes to heat up your LeanCuisine, this gadget is for you.

Oh, and after all this talk about work, I wanted to balance out the conversation a bit. This month’s image is an album cover. I love the image and it reminds me that football season is starting soon. So I’m taking back my Sundays for football.

What should you be “taking back” to be a better worker or relax more?
