National Teacher Day – #ThankATeacher

Today is National Teacher Day. It’s a part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The day(s) are intended to show appreciation for the teaching profession. While it’s not always held at the same time, many countries have similar holidays and/or special days of recognition.
The history of National Teacher Day is a bit sketchy. The movement started in the 1940’s by Mattye Whyte Woodridge. She wrote Eleanor Roosevelt about the need to have a national day to honor teachers. Roosevelt was able to persuade Congress in 1953 to proclaim an official day.

My guess is, if we think back to our school days, we all have a teacher or two that impacted our lives. It could have been someone who supported us at just the right time. Or, in my case, it was someone who was tough on me for the right reasons. I didn’t really appreciated it at the moment; but today, I can see how it helped me become disciplined about learning.
