Market Your Job Opportunities [infographic] – Friday Distraction

We’ve spoken many times about the challenges ahead in recruiting. Recently, something occurred to me: As hiring gets more difficult, professions, industries and even companies are going to invest resources toward educating the public about job opportunities in their chosen field. Not just employment branding, but letting people know what a career in their industry is all about.

One organization that’s already embraced this idea is the National Restaurant Association’s Educational Foundation. Their whole purpose is to educate and inform the public about careers in the restaurant industry. This is smart. Very smart! I know from first-hand experience the pros (and cons) of working in the industry. That’s why I’m delighted to share this information with you.

I must admit, some of the industry statistics in the infographic surprised me – such as the long-term career opportunities it offers. The median tenure of employees in restaurant management and operations careers was 20 years. For those individuals over age 55, the median was more than 30 years.

An Industry of Opportunity:

For the past 14 years, the restaurant industry had outpaced the overall U.S. economy in terms of job growth and is on target to do it again this year. I know many of my HR blogger friends are supporting Share Our Strength’s NoKidHungry campaign right now. As we’re out there dining for a good cause, let’s remember those hard-working people who make our experience fabulous.
