Don’t Rely On Exceptions – Friday Distraction

I once worked for a company that would do everything at the last minute. It was maddening. Employees would be running around like crazy putting a proposal together or a game plan. Senior leadership thought it was their strength and relied upon it as a way to get things done. They also figured they were paying overtime so it didn’t matter.

But getting overtime pay isn’t everything. The employees hated it. They had to give up dropping the kids off at school and family dinners because the company had waited until the last minute to do something everything.

Today’s Time Well Spent cartoon from our friends at Kronos reminds me that we can’t rely upon overtime to get the job done.

Time Well Spent, Kronos, overtime, overtime pay, management, manage, exceptions

Overtime pay isn’t really supposed to be a regularity. It’s supposed to be an exception. If for some reason, an employee needs to put in extra time – they get extra pay for it. Organizations shouldn’t manage by exception because at some point, it might be a real challenge to garner employee support.
