Job Seekers: The Goal Is To Get Multiple Job Offers

Some of the most popular topics on HR Bartender are focused on job search advice. It’s apparent people are out there looking for work. That’s a good thing.

We all know there’s nothing wrong with interviewing for a position. But I wonder sometimes if people realize it’s okay to interview with multiple companies at the same time. Because the goal of looking for a job isn’t just to get one job offer. It’s to get multiple offers.

Yes, let me repeat – a job seeker’s goal is to get multiple offers.

Some of you might be saying, “Hey Sharlyn, I’d be thrilled just to get one job.” And I hear ya. I really do. Just keep in mind that in today’s economy, it’s happening. When I ask recruiters about the market, they tell me “candidates are getting multiple offers”.

Now, I’m not suggesting anyone turn down a good job offer. All I’m saying is if you’re out there looking for a job right now, be careful about putting all your eggs in one basket (i.e. with a single company). Remember the goal – multiple offers.

When you interview with a company and the interview goes great, should you stop looking? No.

HR and the hiring manager say you’re the perfect candidate. Should you stop looking? No.

If the company tells you they’ll call in two weeks with a job offer, should you stop looking? No.

You know when you can stop? When your feet are propped up on top of your brand new desk at that brilliant company that just hired you. And even then, you should always be willing to listen for new opportunities.

There are lots of great companies out there. They have many terrific jobs with excellent benefits. Find the one that is best for you. You’re interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. And remember, that company is talking with multiple candidates. Make sure you do the same.
