Blind Spots by Alexandra Levit

I’ve been a big fan of Alexandra Levit’s work.  Even before I had the opportunity to be a guest with her on Steve Boese’s HR Happy Hour blogtalk radio show.  She’s a leading voice on career development, former columnist for the Wall Street Journal and advisor to the Obama administration on workplace issues.

So I knew I was in for a treat when she graciously sent me a copy of her latest book, Blind Spots.  And the book does not disappoint.  Levit takes on the role of Mythbuster and debunks some of the most common myths found in today’s business world.  Here are just a few of the topics she covers:

Controversy will propel your career.

Employers want you to be yourself.

The problem isn’t you; it’s the organization.

And the ever popular…Do what you love, and the money will follow.

I don’t want to give away the great commentary Levit serves up about these business myths.  But, I will tell you the thing I really enjoyed about the book was that each chapter included tips, resources and questions to move ourselves beyond the myth.  Practical advice that you can definitely use and share with others.

For example, in the chapter about doing what you love, Levit provides a series of questions to help the reader assess the career risk of actually going out there and trying to make a living following your passion.  Questions like:

What do I want to do and why is it risky?

How much risk am I comfortable with?

I’d recommend this book for business pros at any stage in their career.  If you’re looking to make some investments into your professional development for 2012 (and who isn’t?!)…making sure you can see past those blind spots can lead you to success.
