Catching Up With You

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of SHRM Volunteer Leaders in Virginia about using social media in their organizations.  It was an awesome discussion and I walked away with some new resources to check out.  One of them is Aardvark.  If you have any experience with this site, drop me your thoughts in the comments section.

While I was gone, a whole bunch of stuff happened at the bar that I wanted to share.

First, if you were feeling a bit guilty about not keeping up with your blog reading over the holidays, no worries.  Two carnivals went up last week.  One was the Leadership Development Carnival – Best of 2009 Edition hosted by Dan McCarthy at Great Leadership blog.  And the other was the Carnival of HR hosted by The Devon Group.  There’s some really great reading at both of these sites, so be sure to check them out.

Also, Who’s Blogging What posted their “Collective Wisdom” series.  It’s a compilation of thoughts about the future of social media from individuals in the social media space.  I was honored to be one of the contributors to this series.  Many people are already trying to figure out what the next big thing will be on the internets. This resource might give you some perspective on where people are putting their bets.

And I want to give a shout out to a new blog I recently discovered called Political Calculations.  This blog focuses on analyzing current events (i.e. money, business and finance) and providing you with easy-to-use tools to do the math.  Who wouldn’t want that?!  The other thing the blog does is share the best of the best in carnivals.  That way you don’t have to search for it. I’ve found some really interesting carnivals using their insights.

Anywho, Political Calculations name HR Bartender one of The Best Blogs They Found in 2009 and our “Best is Not Always Nice” post made it to their list of Best Posts in 2009.  There are some absolutely fabulous blogs on this list.  I’m so thankful to be included.

Lastly, you guys know that I’m a big advocate for volunteerism and giving back to the community.  Well, the folks at AutoNation are as well and they’re putting their money where their mouth is to promote it.  AutoNation is running the “Driven to Make a Difference” in your community contest.  This is an opportunity to share with everyone the great work being done by volunteers in charities.  Awards will be given to both the charity and the volunteer.  So be sure to check it out and thank someone you know for the countless hours they give to your community.

I’m off to Key West for a presentation to the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association…have fun catching up on your reading!
