Trading Cards – Not An April Fool’s Joke

Today is April 1st.  In some circles, it’s also known as April Fools’ Day.  In others, it’s the anniversary of the founding of Apple Inc.  And, you know how much I like my iPhone.

It’s my iPhone affection that prompted this post.  A few weeks ago I was contacted by Evan Carmichael about helping out with a project they are working on to raise awareness about entrepreneurship.

Starting today, over 30 leading business bloggers are helping to launch a series of 30 Famous Entrepreneur Heroes trading cards to raise money for KivaDarren Rowse of Problogger, Pete Cashmore at Mashable, Guy Kawasaki and Seth Godin are among the big names partnering with Evan Carmichael to champion this good cause.  I guess I’m in there somewhere too . . .

If you’re like me and unfamiliar with Kiva, they’re a global organization that helps to alleviate poverty by connecting micro-investors with aspiring entrepreneurs in underdeveloped countries so they can start their own small businesses.  To learn more, check out their website here.

Each top blogger was asked to name their favorite famous entrepreneur along with a reason why.  A trading card was created for each entrepreneur chosen.  The cards have the person’s picture, a quote, a true story or fun fact about them and other information.  The trading card series will feature the likes of Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington, and Walt Disney to name a few.  You can view the entire list here.  To kick off this project, Evan Carmichael has offered me a small amount of the Limited Edition Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak cards to share with my readers.

Okay, so the idea of “the Steves” (aka Jobs and Wozniak) on trading cards didn’t sound that exciting at first.  But I like Evan Carmichael and they’ve been really super to me, so I kept an open mind.

Well let me tell you, I got my supply of cards to give away and they are really nice.  I mean really nice.  You will want these.  And, they’re a numbered limited edition and encased in plastic – with screws and everything – so the cards can’t get messed up.

So, here’s the deal.  I have 5 sets of “the Steves” trading cards to give away.  I’m going to give 3 sets away here on the blog and 2 sets on the HR Bartender Facebook page.  All you have to do is tell me in the comments the name of someone you’d like to see enshrined on a trading card.  That’s it.  It might be your high school geometry teacher.  Maybe your current supervisor.  Tell us your trading card hero and I’ll put your name in the drawing.  You can enter as many names as you like – each name will get you another chance to win.

The contest will close on Friday, April 9.  Tell your friends.  Vote early and often!  I look forward to seeing your list of heroes.

Oh and P.S. – A huge thanks to the folks at Evan Carmichael for sharing images of one of the cards with me.  This one (of the one and only Duncan Hines) can only be previewed here at HR Bartender.  Thanks for the special treatment guys!
