Pie Fries and White Castle Stuffing Make a Happy Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the United States.  It’s a holiday celebrated to express thanks and gratitude for our blessings and relationships.  Many countries have similar holidays although celebrated at different times of the year.

Traditionally in the U.S., the holiday centers around giving thanks for a bountiful harvest by preparing a large meal of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, etc.  Modern rituals include watching the Macy’s parade and football.

The traditional Thanksgiving meal is quite an undertaking.  There are people who plan for weeks to organize this feast.  If you’re still looking for some creative inspiration for this year’s holiday meal, there are several great food blogs out there offering terrific recipes and guidance.

Serious Eats offers a Food Lab devoted to Thanksgiving basics including how to brine a turkey, the debate on fluffy versus creamy mashed potatoes, and the world’s easiest cranberry sauce.

Trying to figure out what kind of stuffing to serve?  Here’s a taste test of store bought stuffings.  And if you’re looking for something different, check out White Castle Turkey Stuffing.  (No folks, I’m not joking.)

Rebecca Thorman, author of Modite blog, shared a recipe for Risotto with Butternut Squash, Gorgonzola and Toasted Pecans.  Looks absolutely delish!  Mr. Bartender, who is not at all a squash fan, said he might actually try it.

Want something different for dessert?  Serious Eats published a recipe for Pie Fries.  Or you can try Cranberry Ice Cream with White Chocolate Chunks.

I also can’t resist tossing in a few holiday drinks.  Be sure to check out the Pumpkin Martini over at Endless Simmer blog.  Or visit the series titled “What to Drink at Thanksgiving” which includes ciders, wines and beers.

And what post about Thanksgiving would be complete without a few links with creative ways to use those leftovers.  Be sure to check out Leftover Mashed Potato Biscuits and Cranberry Baked French Toast.

Mr. Bartender and I are being quite nontraditional this year.  Since it’s just the two of us, we’ve decided to try our hand at dry aging our own steaks.  Alton Brown showed us how on an episode of Good Eats.  And our wine tradition is Beaujolais Nouveau – I know it’s not the greatest but we’ve been drinking it every Thanksgiving since we met.

Regardless of where you are and what you decide to eat tomorrow, I hope you’re able to take a moment to reflect upon the spirit of the holiday.  Mr. B and I wish you nothing but the very best.  Cheers!

P.S.  Special thanks to Silkroad Technology and Etheon for their support of HR Bartender.  I very much appreciate your friendship and sponsorship.  Be sure to check them out while you’re here!
