SHRM Connect
While I was in New Orleans, SHRM introduced their social networking platform called SHRM Connect.
I always smile when I see the name SHRM Connect. Years ago, my local SHRM chapter (aka the Human Resource Association of Broward County) created a program called HR Connect. It’s a networking happy hour with the proceeds benefiting a local charity. The program is still around and offers great fun for a worthwhile cause. “Connect” in this case was an acronym for Coming Out Networking & Needing Extra Cocktail Time. So when SHRM named their program “Connect”…I thought it was a riot! Anywho, I digress.
Now I must admit I was a bit skeptical about this application because I’m already on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter…so part of me says “another one?!” But I’m starting to see the value it can provide, especially for volunteers and HR Pros new to the social media space.
One of the things associations provide is a sense of community. Let me couch that with “if done properly, one of the things associations can provide is a sense of community.” You and I meet, we both realize that we’re members of SHRM, and we can then interact via SHRM Connect, our HR Community.
The other thing SHRM Connect allows me to do is talk about SHRM stuff (since I am a volunteer) within SHRM Connect. It’s a place for me to talk about core leadership areas, achievement plans, etc. Yes, SHRM does hold their volunteer leaders accountable. And, this could be a great discussion place.
But lastly (and more importantly) my hope is that, over time, SHRM Connect can become a venue for dialogue among members about how to make SHRM a better membership-based organization. Times change and, with that, members need to tell their professional association how to better serve their needs.
SHRM Connect will not replace the Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter space because HR professionals need to dialogue with the C-Suite. And, that’s where the C-Suite is. But it can help us build a stronger SHRM.
