Connecting Commerce and Community

I wanted to share with you a couple of exciting things.  First, I’m really thrilled to say that I had an article published in The Conference Board Review.  The Review is (as taken from their website) a quarterly magazine “of ideas and opinion that raises tough questions about leading-edge issues at the intersection of business and society.”  The magazine is affiliated with The Conference Board, which is (also taken from their website) “a global, independent membership organization working in the public interest.”  The Board is probably best known for producing the Consumer Confidence Index.   Pretty cool, eh?

I hope you’ll take a moment and check out my article on “The Perils of Transparency.”  Also, a few Friends of HR Bartender were included in this issue:  Jennifer Benz, Frank Roche, and Laurie Ruettimann.  Be sure to read their articles as well…all good stuff.

The other exciting thing is that the latest Carnival of HR is up at Social Advantage.  There’s a theme to this carnival…Social Capital.  Lots of really great posts.  Whether you’re new to the social media scene or a veteran, there’s definitely something you can take away from this one.  Also, I wanted to mention that Jon Ingham has a second blog called Strategic HCM…I’m a big fan of Jon’s thought processes so if you don’t already subscribe, you might want to add him to your Google Reader.

It’s fascinating to watch and participate the dynamic as social media becomes mainstream.  Because I blog and I’m on Facebook, Twitter, etc.  sometimes it’s easy to forget that not everyone is using social media  (hello to my little sister…time to get a Facebook account!)  For me, it’s the new normal.  But there are still plenty of people not using social media applications.

The fascinating part is the role businesses are playing in taking social media mainstream.  Companies are making the connection between commerce and community.  I saw a great tweet about it recently – it’s not about B2C or B2B anymore.  It’s about B2N – business to network.

If you’re still trying to figure out how you or your department/company fit in all this, don’t worry.  You’re not alone.  In fact, you have an entire community of support.  So be sure to check out The Conference Board Review, Social Advantage – Carnival of HR, and be an active participant in the community.  That’s what your network is all about.
