First Saturday in May

The first Saturday in May is pretty darn close to a national holiday at my house.  Since 1875, this day has been known for one thing:  The Kentucky Derby.  And, even though every year we talk about hosting a Derby party (and never quite getting around to it)…Mr. Bartender and I do enjoy watching the race and making a mini-celebration of it at home.

And every year I say the same thing:  It would be nice to see a Triple Crown winner.  Amazing that we haven’t seen one since 1978 with Affirmed.

Last year’s Derby was very bittersweet.  While it was a beautiful win for Big Brown, it was a tragic moment for Eight Belles (who is the only horse to have died in the Derby.)  Churchill Downs will be conducting a ceremony during this year’s race to remember her accomplishments.  Let’s hope this year’s race doesn’t see any injuries.

And, we can’t talk about the Derby without mentioning the mint julep.  The history of this cocktail is a bit cloudy.  The name julep is derived from Arabic and Persian meaning rose water.  And, in the 1800’s, Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced the drink to Washington DC.  However, as much as we associate the drink with the race, it’s really not that popular.

So if you are looking for something sweet and minty to enjoy during the most exciting two-minutes in sports, try this mint julep sorbet.  (Compliments of Emeril Lagassee)  And, if you’re looking for something savory to nosh on during the race, try the muffin recipe I left over at HR Gumbo.  Cheers!
