Are You Ready?

No matter where you live or what business you’re in, there’s probably some kind of disaster that you’re susceptible to.  That’s why I want to tell you about the “Ready” Campaign — a new social media campaign from the Department of Homeland Security and the Ad Council.  The “Ready” program seeks to better prepare Americans for disasters, both natural and otherwise.

As HR Pros, we’re almost always involved in emergency and disaster planning.  Not only is it important for us to protect the furniture, fixtures and equipment.  But we need to remember our employees and their concerns during emergencies.  This program is a resource that can assist with your emergency planning and communication process.

In a nutshell, the program encourages people to: (1) Get a Program Kit, (2) Make a Family Plan and (3) Be Informed.

If you have a blog or company website or intranet, you can download the FEMA app which provides updates on emergency situations as well as guidelines on how individuals can better prepare — the information can be customized to a specific region.

For families, the “Make a Plan” item is very useful.  It contains several documents – including a family emergency plan that individuals can print out with contact and meeting place information.

In addition, the “Ready” campaign has created a video blog, which features testimonials from Americans about the importance of being prepared for emergencies and natural disasters.  You can also follow the Ready program on social media.

Living in South Florida and seeing the devastation a hurricane can cause makes me really appreciate this resource.  Even if you don’t live in the path of a hurricane, the “Ready” program is a valuable tool.  Be safe.  Check it out.
