5 Things Any Business Person Needs to Know (Part 1)

A couple years ago, Marcus Buckingham wrote a book called “The One Thing You Need to Know.”  Now, I’m not going to spoil the ending and tell you what the one thing is…

But, I would contend that there are really 5 things (subjects if you will) we need to know about to stay on top of our game.  And over the next few posts, I’d like to share with you my top 5 things any business person should know.

#1 is TECHNOLOGY.  Every single person on the planet needs to know something about technology.  And, it’s not that hard.  Come on, if my 92 year old father-in-law can send an email everyday … then we can all learn about technology.

When you are thinking about your technology knowledge, here are some things to consider:

Know the basic functions of the Microsoft Office Suite.  Right now, it should be a given that people entering the workforce know Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  They are learning this stuff in high school.  But, I’m amazed at the number of people who don’t know how to create a presentation.

Understand how to find information on the Internet.  There is so much information at our fingertips.  Google and Wikipedia are great places to start.  And fellow HR folks shouldn’t forget the SHRM web site.

Find a social networking site that fits your personality.  There are many to choose from like MySpace and Facebook.  Or you could focus on business-related sites like LinkedIn and PartnerUp.

And, lastly, keep your ear to the ground on emerging web-based communication mediums like Twitter and Second Life.  They may not be mainstream now…but they will define the future of technology.
