(Editor’s Note: Today’s post is brought to you by our friends at the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). As the philanthropic foundation of the National Restaurant Association, the NRAEF works to attract, develop and retain professionals for the restaurant industry. Enjoy today’s post!)
In the human resources profession, we’ve been talking a lot lately about competency models. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) introduced a new competency model a couple years ago. Dr. Jeff Pon, SHRM’s chief human resources officer, spoke with us about it here on the blog.
Competency models are roadmaps. They provide insights on the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in a specific profession or a specific industry.
The National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF) recently introduced a Food and Beverage Service Competency Model. The model profiles employability and technical skills essential to achieving success in the industry. It’s one of 22 competency models featured in an Industry Competency Model Initiative with the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. Other industry models included were construction, energy, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing. The models are hosted on the Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop website.
One in three Americans start their working careers in the restaurant industry. From a career development perspective, the restaurant industry is responsible for helping many people build the foundation for being a productive employee. We all have to learn how to be a good employee somewhere.
I had a chance to talk with NRAEF about why the model was created and how companies are using the model. They said their main objective was to create a state-of-the-art, industry specific model that charts the path to career success. As we’ve seen in other infographics, careers in the restaurant industry are not one-size-fits-all. Restaurant employers are giving people a chance and providing them with opportunities to learn and grow in the 5 Tiers.
If you’re interested in learning more about the food and beverage industry, check out the NRAEF’s latest report, “Who Works in the Restaurant Industry”. It provides greater details about the competency model and how people can enter, advance, and succeed in the restaurant sector.0
