Today’s reader question touches on a complicated subject – conflict of interest.

I’m an office manager and have been with the company over 10 years. The company president’s daughter applied for the HR position that has recently became open. Is this a conflict of interest?

FYI, I am not a family member. The father that started the business and passed away about 4 years ago and the mother passed away last year. There are 9 siblings and not all are involved in the business directly. The family members DO NOT get along. This family is so dysfunctional…

As this reader has pointed out, working in a family owned business is a unique experience and can have unique challenges. Before anyone is accused of impropriety, it’s best to evaluate the situation.

What do you think? Is there anything else this office manager should do?
