You're absolutely right. We can use the 'both/and' mentality for many of our challenges. It's a great tool for understanding and solving problems. Thanks for commenting!

[...] Thinking Both/And: we’ve highlighted her contributions in ‘Crackers’ before, but Sharlyn Lauby’s recent post at The Hr Bartender is truly a cracker. Constructive, positive and challenging – and the concept of ‘Both/And’ is one that deserves greater consideration in many, many aspects of working life. Sharlyn, we will putting pen to paper shortly, and thank you for the inspiration. [...]

As ever, a great post. Just finished reading Richard Donkin's "The Future of Work" (will publish our review shortly), with simmers with frsutration at the barriers - mostly mental or a lack of willpower - to chaning how we look at and think about work. It strikes me the whole concept of "moving from a ‘either/or’ to a ‘both/and’" has applications beyond just our relationship with technology: it's not a panacea to the ills of bad practice, but it could be a very useful tool in helping us to think through ways of constructively challenging them. Thanks for a very inspiring piece!
