Recently, I spoke to a group of HR Pros on social media. My presentation centered around why they should use it and how to leverage it in their HR Departments and companies. During the presentation, someone asked about becoming more involved with social media. Their point was, social media has exploded on the scene and it was easy to fall behind on this quickly evolving medium. How do you know where to start?
Good question. I’ve written before about the importance of embracing technology. Mark Stelzner at Inflexion Advisors also penned a great post recently on HR and Web 3.0. And the news has articles every day about companies that should have been more active in social media. If you’re not making an attempt to learn and participate, well…you’ve got some catching up to do.
One place to start learning about all things social media is by reading Mashable. Mashable is the world’s largest social networking news blog. While you’re there, be sure to check out my new post called “Should Your Company Have A Social Media Policy?” with props to my friends Shannon Seery Gude, Eric B. Meyer and Scott Monty for the excellent advice.
So what are you waiting for? Get involved with social media. Chances are your employees are already actively engaged. Maybe even your colleagues. You don’t want to be left behind, do you?

Hi! I'm Sharlyn Lauby, an HR pro turned consultant. I created the HR Bartender blog so people would have a friendly place to discuss workplace issues. And since, over the years, I've developed an appreciation for the culinary arts (translation: I'm a Foodie) you'll see some of that here too. So, pull up a stool and order your favorite drink . . . the bar is always open.

Sharyln, Where did you give this recent talk and are there any upcoming events where you will be doing something similar? I am one of those people that feel left behind and am trying to learn as much as possible and play catch up.
Thanks,
Dennis
Hi Dennis. Last week’s talk was in Jacksonville, Florida. I also have presentations scheduled near Orlando, Tampa, Key West and Dallas.
I’m happy to take this message out to other organizations. Feel free to contact me via the ‘Day Job‘ page if you’d like to discuss further…
Have been immersed in social media for 4 weeks – from standing still to picking up considerable speed. It is a big investment, big. An investment of time and energy to figure out how to make it work for you. Having said that, you are so right – I cannot think of anyone who would not benefit by jumping in. Nice nudge and good recommendations.
