Im a VP and could care less about titles. Call me the janitor, just pay me what I am worth. Our company's philosphy is "leave your ego's at the door".... Everyone's roll is important, regardless of what is on your business card. I wish our business community would start to get real and stop taking themselves so seriously! :) Just my 2 cents... thanks for listening... now carry on :)

People should have to earn their title and it should represent their expertise and quality of work. Unfortunately that's not the case and you can't make any assumptions based on their title, so I think comparing it to the DDS is a good analogy.

Maybe after years of being saluted for my title in the military (which always made me slightly uncomfortable), I tend to have an uneasy relationship with titles. Introducing myself to employees - I tell them I work in HR - and don't introduce myself as the HR Officer. Why? Because frankly my ego is fine without a title and really, like you said so well, what value does it add. Sometimes titles can great a divide between people and that's the last thing I want to do. Nice post :)

As a weekly collector of new titles/hats/responsibilities in a growing company, I agree. My title is a placeholder, it does not in any way convey the competency of anyone in my organization, or even whether the title remotely conveys the employees actual job.

I like the DDS analogy - and agree that the doorstop book makes me a little sad.

As a book lover, the analogy of the book used a door stop made my little heart ache for a moment. DDC is an excellent analogy for job titles; outdated.
Inflated titles and underflated titles are why people should list their accomplishments on their resume. I can tell you all day long that I'm the HR Administrator but if you dont know what I accomplished during my tenure at my XYZ Company, that's going to mean squat.
