This weekend is Labor Day in the United States. There appear to be lots of stories about how Labor Day started (you can check them out here and here.) Bottom line, Labor Day is to celebrate the American worker.
Given what’s going on with the economy, I’m struggling a bit with Labor Day. There are so many people out of jobs. And, while we’re starting to hear positive news…we still have a long way to go in terms of the job market.
I’m thinking, on this Labor Day, we should be celebrating everyone who has (1) been a worker, (2) is a worker, (3) wants to be a worker and (4) will be a worker in the future. Let’s make this year’s holiday about all of us and the past, present, and future of work.
And if, as you celebrate, you’re looking for something delish to cook this weekend, check out the Build a Better Burger site for recipes. There’s something here for everyone – beef burgers, turkey burgers, or veggie burgers (and everything in between).
So enjoy the long weekend and be sure to celebrate yourself too. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite clips about Labor Day. Cheers!

Hi! I'm Sharlyn Lauby, an HR pro turned consultant. I created the HR Bartender blog so people would have a friendly place to discuss workplace issues. So, pull up a stool and order your favorite drink . . . the bar is always open.

Excellent job! Al was very underrated as a role model for the working stiff. And thanks for the link to the Build a Better Burger site. Have a great weekend!
